Childrens hands with crayons

The training course was fantastic, very thorough, but delivered in a relaxed atmosphere, and I gained so much from it, my initial nerves about ‘returning to learning’ after so long, turning to confidence with the knowledge learned each week.

I helped in the creche for a Family Know How course, keeping the children happy and busy, to allow the parents to learn about good nutrition, and how to prepare and cook healthy meals, confident that their little ones are being cared for in the next room. Along with the toys and activities, the children often did a simple cooking activity, to complement what the parents were making, meaning that each family left with a complete two‑course meal, to eat at home.

When that course ended, I began helping at the Young Parents Group, which runs throughout the year. The volunteer role here is again to keep the children playing and happily occupied, allowing the young parents some time to relax and socialise with each other, and give the Home-Start Coordinators the opportunity to discuss any issues they might have.

I feel very proud to play a small part in the much needed and incredible work that Home-Start South Leicestershire provides.
